Millions of Americans can get Canadian passports under new law

Under the latest Canadian citizenship law, people with Canadian ancestry have automatically become eligible for Canadian citizenship. Shout out to American friends and family: you are among the most likely to have a direct ancestor to be born in Canada, and this may mean you are newly eligible for Canadian citizenship. On 6 November 2025, Dr Tim Veale (Hong Kong) and Daniel Scuka (Germany), both members of Grits Abroad, provided evidence and answered questions on the challenges for Canadian voters overseas to actually exercise their voting right.
